THE STEEL

The steel cycle is the cycle of life. Steel is in human relationships, consumer dreams, hope for healing, the intimacy of homes, and the ideals of a better future. It is present in our daily lives even before we are born. In everything we do, anytime and anywhere, this is an essential material for life.

At the present stage of society’s development, it is impossible to imagine the world without the use of steel. Steel production is a strong indicator of a country’s stage of economic development. But making steel items requires a technique that must be cyclically renewed, so the steelmakers’ constant investment is in research. The beginning and the process of improving the use of iron represented great challenges and achievements for humanity.

Iron age

The Iron Age began in 1200 BC and is considered the last technological and cultural stage of prehistory. Its discovery promoted major changes in society. Agriculture developed rapidly because of the newly manufactured utensils. The making of more modern weapons enabled the territorial expansion of various peoples, which changed the face of Europe and part of the world.

Gradually new techniques were being discovered, making iron harder and corrosion resistant. An example of this was the addition of limestone to the iron ore and coal mixture, which enabled better absorption of the ore impurities. New heating techniques were also being developed, as well as the production of more modern materials to work with cast iron.

With the possibility of obtaining iron in the liquid state, by increasing the temperatures of the forges, the technique of casting firearms, cannonballs and church bells was born. Later, the use of iron was extended to manor houses of large gates and elaborately designed hearths.

The great change did not occur, however, until 1856, when it was discovered how to produce steel. This is because steel is stronger than cast iron and can be produced in large quantities, serving as a raw material for many industries.
