TYPES OF STEEL

There are a very large number of shapes and types of steel products. The wide variety of steel available in the market is due to the fact that each of its applications requires changes in composition and shape.

Regarding the chemical composition of steel, processing, controls and testing (in order to meet customer specifications), as well as its end use, the steel ratings are:

Carbon Steel:

They are low carbon or low alloy steels of broadly defined chemical composition.

Steels Alloy/Special

They are alloyed or high carbon steels of narrowly defined chemical composition for all elements and rigid specifications.

Mechanical construction steels:

They are carbon and low alloy steels for forging, bearings, springs, shafts, machined parts, etc.

Tool steels:

These are high carbon or high alloy steels for the manufacture of tools and dies for hot and cold work, including fast steels.

GEOMETRIC FORM

Another form of classification added to steel is its geometric shape. The categories are:

Semi-finished:

Products coming from continuous casting process or roughing rolling destined for subsequent processing lamination or hot forging.

  • Plates
  • Blocks
  • Billets

Flat Products:

Steel products, the result of a rolling process whose width is extremely greater than the thickness (L> E), and are sold in the form of plates and coils of carbon and special steels.

Uncoated, in "carbon steels":

Coils and thick plates of hot strip mill – LTQ (5mm < E > 12,7mm)

  • Coils and thick plates of hot strip mill - LTQ (5mm 12.7mm)
  • Coils and thick plates of thick plates - LCG (E > 12,7 mm)
  • Coils and thin plates hot rolled (BQ/CFQ)
  • Coils and thin plates cold rolled (BF/CFF)

Coated in "carbon steel":

  • Packing Sheets (tinplate - tin-plated - and chrome leaves)
  • Electro-galvanized coils and sheets (EG - Electrolytic Galvanized)
  • Hot-dip galvanized coils and sheets (HDG - Hot Dipped Galvanized)
  • Aluminum-zinc alloy coils and sheets
  • Pre-painted coils and sheets

In "special steels":

  • Silicon steel coils and sheets (electric sheets)
  • Stainless steel coils and sheets
  • Coils and plates in high carbon steels (C> = 0.50%) and other alloy steels

Long Products:

Steel products, resulting from the rolling process, whose cross sections have polygonal shape and their length is extremely larger than the largest dimension of the section, being offered in carbon and special steels.

In carbon steels:

  • Light profiles (h < 80 mm)
  • Average profiles (80 mm < h <= 150 mm)
  • Heavy profiles (h > 150 mm)
  • Rebar
  • Wire rod (mainly for wires).
  • Bars (quality construction)
  • Seamless pipes
  • Drawn

In alloy / special steels:

  • Wire rod (for screws and others)
  • Steel bars in mechanical construction
  • Tool steel bars
  • Stainless steel and valve bars.
  • Seamless pipes
  • Drawn
